he Famagusta Chamber of Commerce and Industry has launched a new series of meetings with political leaders, focusing primarily on issues concerning the enclosed city of Famagusta.
On Wednesday, 17 September 2025, delegations of the Chamber, led by myself, met with the President of the Democratic Party (DIKO), Mr Nikola Papadopoulos, and subsequently with the President of the Ecological and Citizens’ Cooperation Movement, Mr Stavros Papadouris, at the respective party headquarters in Nicosia. Parliamentary members and party representatives also participated. On Thursday, 18 September, the Chamber hosted a delegation from the Social Democratic EDEK party, led by Mr Nikos Anastasiou, at our Paralimni offices during their tour of free Famagusta.

During these meetings, our delegation stressed that the return of the enclosed city of Famagusta to its lawful residents under UN administration remains the highest Confidence-Building Measure (CBM), as defined in UN Security Council Resolutions 550 (1984), 789 (1992), and 2537 (2020). We also highlighted the importance of the Chamber’s operations in the enclosed area under UN administration as a practical CBM.
In addition to addressing key issues affecting the enclosed city, we emphasised the serious implications of Turkey’s announced plan to construct 1,192 housing units in occupied Deryneia, describing it as potentially “the final blow” to a comprehensive Cyprus settlement. The Chamber also expressed concern over the longstanding injustices faced by property owners in the occupied areas and reiterated the urgent need for the creation of a National Fund for Loss of Use of Occupied Properties. The unlawful detention of five fellow citizens was also raised as further evidence of ongoing human rights violations.
The Famagusta Chamber of Commerce and Industry will continue this programme of meetings with political leaders, presenting its positions and concrete proposals for the future of Famagusta and Cyprus.
