The speaker of the lecture was the President of the Department of Agricultural Sciences, Biotechnology and Food Science at CUT, Associate Professor Dimitris Tsalta, on the topic “Biotechnology in the service of food production in Cyprus”.
During Dr. Tsalta’s talk, the current research activity and research ecosystem in the field of agriculture and food in Cyprus was developed in the light of the Green Agreement.
The concept of Biotechnology (classical and modern) was explained and numerous applications of Modern Biotechnology in important issues of local and international food production were discussed.
It was also explained to the attendees how microbiome identification technologies of different products can support product localization and strengthen origin designation products or the emergence of new ones.
The Cyprus University of Technology and the Department of Agricultural Sciences, Biotechnology and Food Science, as the only academic department in the country that trains and researches in the field of biotechnological applications from the field to our fork for food production, develops technologies and tools that enhance production, highlight the specific characteristics of local products, increase their quality and can make them valuable players in international markets.
The audience showed great interest in the topic with many questions and discussion that continued at the reception offered after the speech by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
In his brief address to the lecture, the President of the Famagusta Chamber of Commerce, Mr. Charalambos Manoli, described the topic of the lecture as “very important” and “topical” and expressed his thanks to the CUT for the lectures. “We look forward to strengthening and expanding our cooperation,” Manolis noted.
Those who attended the lecture, which was held at the Municipal Museum of Ayia Napa “Thalassa”, were given a Certificate of Attendance.
The lectures are part of the Cooperation Protocol signed between the CUT and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, which provides, among other things, for the joint organization of a series of scientific lectures on issues of interest to the local community and the business world of the free province of Famagusta, in cooperation with other institutions,
The aim of these lectures is to provide new knowledge, develop skills and cultivate free thinking on a wide range of topics of interest to the residents and entrepreneurs of the region, such as entrepreneurship, tourism, economy, innovation, circular economy, high technology, Artificial Intelligence and agriculture, with the scientific contribution of the University’s academic staff.
The lectures will continue in the new year.
